4 Ways to Celebrate National Children’s Craft Day

National Children’s Craft Day takes place on March 14 each year, and it is the perfect opportunity to engage your little (or not-so-little) one in crafting. Whether you have a toddler, a teen or a child who falls somewhere in between, this day celebrates opening kids’ eyes to the world of crafts, sparks imagination and instills children with a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem.

Working on crafts provides numerous benefits for kids and teaches valuable life skills. It also pulls them away from screens and provides non-electronic entertainment. One of the great things about crafting is that it is something anyone can do. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money and there are projects for kids of all ages and skill levels. From diamond painting to soap making, here are a few of our favorite projects to celebrate National Children’s Craft Day!

1. Try Diamond Painting

Diamond painting is an enjoyable craft that is appropriate for virtually all ages. It teaches patience, eases stress, improves focus, boosts confidence and refines dexterity. Teaching your child this craft provides a multitude of emotional and mental benefits and makes it possible for them to create stunning works of art, regardless of their age or skill level.

From simple designs featuring round drill diamonds that are ideal for kids under the age of 10 to more complex designs using square drill diamonds that are great for older kids, Diamond Art Club has a wide selection of artwork for all of the children in your home.

2. Design Jewelry

Jewelry making is another craft that is appropriate for kids of all ages. If you have toddlers, dry noodles in varying shapes and colors and some yarn are all that is needed for a fun-filled afternoon of jewelry making. You can swap out the pasta for colorful plastic beads for elementary school kids, while middle and high schoolers will enjoy working with shimmering glass or gemstone beads, beading cord, necklace chains and jewelry findings.

Similar to working on a diamond painting, designing jewelry with young kids helps them develop hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity. It’s also a great way to teach them about colors and shapes. Making jewelry provides stress relief for older kids, improves focus and gives them a sense of accomplishment.

3. Tie-Dye Shirts

Tie-dyeing t-shirts is a project that never goes out of style. It is also fun and appropriate for kids of all ages and doesn’t cost a lot to get started. When you choose this project for your Children’s Craft Day celebrations, your kid will have a one-of-a-kind garment that they will love showing off to their friends well beyond March 14.

To make tie-dyed shirts, all you need is a tie-dye kit, some white cotton t-shirts and a bit of creativity. There are several techniques and patterns to choose from, or you can let your child use their imagination to come up with their own design. The possibilities are endless!

4. Make Melt and Pour Soap

With a melt and pour soap base, any kid can make soap to give as gifts or use themselves to make bath time a whole lot more fun. While making soap using the traditional cold process method requires working with dangerous ingredients and waiting several weeks for the finished soap to “cure” before using it, making melt and pour soap is simple and safe for kids as young as 4 (with parental assistance and supervision).

For this project, you’ll need a melt and pour soap base, molds, colorants and fragrance (if desired). Both clear and white bases are available, so it is possible to create shimmering translucent soaps as well as soaps in solid colors. There is a lot of room for creativity with melt and pour soap, and kids love getting cleaned up in the bath using their creations. Handmade soap makes a great gift, too!
