Waking up to the sound of rain on a wet, chilly morning outside your window can be disappointing sometimes, especially in the spring and summer when we’re itching to get outside and enjoy nature. However, rainy days can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. Now you finally have time to do that thing you’ve been meaning to get around to—cleaning the house, starting a diamond painting project, reorganizing your closet. Whatever it is, take this day as an opportunity to do something different. If you’re not being productive the next time a rainy day comes around, you can also try some of these fun activities like building a fort or having a game day with the fam.

1. Build a Fort

You don’t need to be a kid to enjoy a good ol’ fashioned fort. But, if you do have kids in the house, they’ll definitely want in on your rainy day fort building. This is one of the most popular silly things to do inside on a rainy day. There are dozens of great ways to make a fort, depending on how invested you want to get in the project. If you have a living room that permits it, you can hang sheets all around the couch area, turning your entire living room into a fort. Then, toss in a bunch of pillows and blankets and get comfy! Another classic method for fort building is to use a table and chairs to hold up a blanket. Add books or another heavy item to keep the fort’s ceiling tight and in place. Blanket forts are another fun and aesthetically pleasing (just search “blanket forts” on Pinterest) kind of fort that can be made in the living room or a bedroom. Simply string a large bedsheet over a clothing line in the room that stretches from one side to the other and decorate the inside to your liking!

2. Play Games

Being stuck inside all day is a great excuse to have a game night (or a game day—you choose!). Gather the family in one room or invite a group of friends over for a night of laughter and fun. The options are endless when it comes to a game night, so pick your favorite. Fun adult box games like What Do You Meme? or Cards Against Humanity put your wits to the test, while classic games like Monopoly, Candy Land or Chutes and Ladders can keep the kids entertained for hours.

3. Do Some Crafts

For us, a rainy day means a crafting day—finally! Rainy days are the perfect motivation to finally start that project you’ve been wanting to work on. Break out your diamond painting kit and get the family involved, too! Scrapbooking is another great rainy day craft because it can be time-consuming to add pictures and fun decorations to each page. Set a goal for yourself and try to work on a few pages while you have some extra time inside. Knitting and crocheting are two other fun activities we like to work on when the weather is gross.

4. Reorganize Your Home

Okay, so this one’s not as fun as the others, but a rainy day trapped inside is sometimes the perfect opportunity to get around to the reorganizing you’ve been meaning to do. Don’t feel pressure to revamp the whole house. Instead, just pick one particular area that could use some extra love—maybe the office or the kitchen—and start minimizing. Get rid of things that you haven’t used in more than six months, and start finding better ways to organize the things that you need to access on a regular basis. This is also a great time to do a deep clean—dusting decorations, really wiping down all of the kitchen counters well and, what the heck, while you’re at it, scrub the inside of your oven or microwave.

5. Teach Yourself a New Recipe

When you can’t head outside for your evening run, you’ve got some extra time to make a special meal, so why not test out a new recipe? It’s the perfect time to experiment with appetizers like blistered shishito peppers cooked in a cast-iron skillet or a fun dessert like Oreo cake. Come up with a new three-course meal and make a quick stop at the grocery store for extra ingredients. Then, surprise your family with a gourmet homemade dinner.
