What Is a Diamond Painting Cover Minder?

Diamond painting cover minders are a fun and useful accessory, made from objects such as pins, buttons, small figurines or cabochons, that have been turned into magnets to hold your work's cover in place.

They add a touch of individuality to your project and serve a practical function by securely holding your protective cover in place and keeping it out of your way when applying drills. By securing the cover, cover minders also reduce the risk of diamond painting problems by keeping dust or pet hair out of the adhesive.

How to Create a Diamond Painting Cover Minder

Materials Needed:

  • An old earring (without the post), cabochon or whatever you would like to use to make your cover minder. Choose something small with a flat back.
  • Small button.
  • Two small, strong magnets
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1: Select Something to Make Your Cover Minder Out of

Choose a piece that will serve as the top part of your diamond minder, which will be visible when holding a cover in place. If you are using an earring, remove the post.

Step 2: Add a Magnet

Attach a strong magnet to the back of the earring or cabochon, etc., applying a drop of hot glue to the object's flat surface. Carefully place a magnet in the glue, ensuring it's securely attached. Hold the magnet in place long enough to let the glue cool and form a strong bond.

Step 3: Create the Button Backing

Use a small button as the backing for your cover minder. Taking care to position the magnet so the two magnets attract each other, apply a small amount of hot glue to the back of the button. Attach the second magnet to the hot glue, holding the button in place for a few seconds until it sets.

Step 4: Assemble the Cover Minder

Bring the earring and the button with magnets attached close together, aligning them properly. The magnets will attract each other, creating a strong bond and holding the cover minder together.

Test the cover minder by separating the earring and the button. Place the top piece over the cover on the front side of your canvas and the button piece on the back. The magnets should stick together, firmly holding the cover piece.

Step 5: Make Additional Cover Minders

Repeat the steps above to create as many additional cover minders as you'd like. Having multiple minders makes keeping the cover in place easier and more secure. It's especially helpful if you are trying to cover all but a small area of the canvas, as you can use multiple minders to hold several cover pieces in place.
