Discovering their art style is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities in any artist’s career.  It develops out of the many choices you make when creating art: how you use color, composition and form, which mediums and techniques you employ, as well as what your ideas behind the work are. Whether you are hoping to create art to sell or looking for a new hobby, defining your style makes your art more memorable. It also helps you uncover which choices work best for your self-expression.

Developing your artistic style takes time. Some artists do it by studying art history, reacting to, and being inspired by the works of others. Others take the more hands-on approach of working with different styles and mediums until they find something that feels right. Either way, finding your own aesthetic is a personal process that you must experience for yourself. Each artist has their own approach, and no single one is better than another. Whether you discover that you love the freedom of painting on a blank canvas or prefer using diamond painting kits to show off your interests and personality, there’s no wrong option. At Diamond Art Club®, we’re here to help you on your way to developing your own, unique, art style. Keep reading to learn how..

Look at the Artwork You’ve Already Created

Your style combines your techniques, subject matter, color choices, media and more. It’s what connects all of your artwork/pieces to form a unique yet cohesive collection. Your style can change over time, too, so examine your early work as well as more recent pieces and everything in between.

Pay attention to the subjects and themes appearing most frequently in your work. Also, look for design elements or techniques that tie your creations together. Consider how your work would stand out compared to that of other artists. You may be able to identify your style just by carefully examining your past artwork.

Explore Art Styles

When a number of artists during a given time period appear to be working in similar ways, they are sometimes called "movements". Experiment with New Techniques

While developing your art style, be sure to try out various techniques. Experimenting with new approaches regularly builds your skillset while helping you uncover what you enjoy most — and what you don’t. Keeping a journal where you record the methods you have tried — along with what your experience was, (what you liked and didn’t like about them — can be helpful in aiding and tracking your development.

Embrace the Imperfections

Even experienced artists with rock-solid styles make mistakes, so why wouldn’t you? As you practice and work toward developing your unique style, learn to love the mistakes. Find beauty in the imperfections and reflect upon how you could incorporate them as a part of your style. Hang on to all of your creations, including those you don’t particularly like. Everything you make is a part of your story, and every mistake or imperfection is a learning opportunity. You may find that something you once viewed as a “mistake” has now become integral to your artistic expression.

Closing Thoughts

Finding your artistic style isn’t something you can do overnight. It takes time and reflection. And because an artist’s style is constantly evolving, you’ll likely discover that yours, too, changes with time. It may develop over the years, or could even vary at different times of the year. Embrace the evolution of your work — and never try to force yourself into a box to achieve a specific style.
