Born in Washington D.C. in 1946, Ms. Swatland began painting at age five. After earning an MFA, she spent another five years studying classical figure and landscape painting at the Art Students League in New York. Combining her love of family summers at the beach with her art training, she found her favorite subjects in children, flowers, and landscapes.
